The Government announced on 14 January that it would support the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Bill, brought forward as a Private Members’ measure by Karen Buck, MP for Westminster North.
16 January 2018
Summary of key points:
- A Private Members' Bill, currently before Parliament, proposes to create a new duty on all residential landlords to ensure that their properties are fit for human habitation.
- The Bill has received official support from the Government, which means that it is almost certain to become law.
- The Federation believes this measure will help to raise housing standards, especially in the private rented sector, and strongly supports it.
The Bill is due for second reading on Friday 19 January and we'll be providing MPs with a briefing in advance, outlining our support and asking them to do likewise.
